Chapter 6 - Gather your bearings

The theme this week was gathering my compass bearings. I find it interesting that some weeks can be outwardly very intense, which can translate into having many tasks, little free time, and lots of work. Yet, there can be other weeks where the opposite is true. In the physical world, I’m not so busy, and the intensity is inner and emotional. This week was of the latter. It may have looked like I was following my routine, but my mind was working overtime.

I discovered a lot about myself this week, and I believe I uncovered my “bearings” for what I want to pursue as a career, more specifically than just environmental conservation. I want to combine my passion for nature with my love of photography. The discipline that encompasses both of these is called science communication. I want my career to be in conservation photography. By sharing the scientific method in the form of a story, the implications of any study can be more powerful than just sharing data. Please share if anyone knows someone in an adjacent field or a contact who might provide my guidance.

Besides these exciting revelations, the week had several other highlights. I had the opportunity to have a private tour of the local museum and to explore their archives. They have some truly wonderful artifacts; my favorites were the enormous sea creature carcasses like the king crab, an articulated bald eagle skeleton, and native Alaskan parkas. The tour occupied my Saturday morning. The rest of the day was spent xc skiing with the other students in the cohort. It was a blast, even if four of us, including me, were separated from the group and lost for over an hour. The views were worth it!

My new internship is also going very well. We still await the whales to migrate north after wintering in Hawaii. In the meantime, we are cataloging photos of whales that have been in Kachemak Bay previously. We are also learning to use AI to identify individual whales. Along with that, we collected sea otter scats to analyze their diets. We are also working on identifying and naming individual otters using AI tech.

The final news of the week is very exciting. I have decided to start a photography business to make extra money. I plan on shooting portraits, products, and events. If you know anyone who needs any of these services, send them my way!

As you can likely tell, Alaska suits me very well. I don’t know how I could ever move back to Ohio. I am full of energy and enthusiasm and coming up with exciting new ideas. The sun is starting to shine more and more. It now rises at 8 am and sets at 7 pm. This is a big improvement from 10 am - 4 pm just a few weeks ago. People are warning me to brace myself because Alaska gets even livelier and busier as the sun starts shining more!

El tema de esta semana fue decide a donde apuntas to compass. Me parece muy interesante que algunas semanas pueden ser muy ocupadas, en el mundo exterior, se manifiesta con muchas cosas que hacer y poco tiempo libre. Y lo opuesto también es cierto. En el mundo físico, no estoy tan ocupado, la intensidad es en mi vida interior y emocional. Esta semana fue intensa para mi vida interior. Pareciera que solo seguía mi rutina, pero mi mente estaba trabajando tiempo extra.

Esta semana descubrí mucho sobre mí mismo. Creo que encontré a donde quiero apuntar mi “compas” y que quiero hacer para mi carrera, con más detalle que solo participar en la conservación de la naturaleza. Quiero combinar mi pasión por la naturaleza con mi amor por la fotografía. La disciplina que combina las dos se llama la comunicación de ciencias. Y quiero comunicar ciencia en el modo de conservación fotográfica. Si conoces alguien en una carrera semejante, por favor pasen su contact.

Más allá de estas revelaciones emocionantes, esta semana tuvo otras cosas padres. Tuve la oportunidad de hacer un tour privado por el museo local, y pude explorar sus archivos. Unas de mis cosas favoritas fueron los esqueletos de unos animales marinos enormes, y el esqueleto de una águila. Este tour ocupó toda mi mañana el sábado. El resto del día me la pase esquiando con los otros estudiantes. Estuvo muy divertido, aunque cuatro de nosotros nos perdimos por más de una hora. Las vistas fueron recompensa suficiente.

También me está yendo bien en mi nuevo trabajo. Todavía estamos esperando que las ballenas regresen de Hawaii. Mientras esperamos, estamos catalogando fotos de ballenas de años pasados, y usamos inteligencia artificial para reconocer ballenas individuales. En acompañamiento con eso, estamos recolectando 💩 de nutrias para analizar sus dietas. También estamos tomando fotos de las nutrias y dándoles nombres a los individuos con IA.

La última noticia de esta semana es muy emocionante para mi. He decidido empezar un negocio de fotografía para empezar a ganar dinero. Mi plan es fotografiar retratos, productos, y eventos. Si conocen a alguien que requiera mis servicios, pasenle mi contacto.

Si no te has dado cuenta, Alaska me está mas que encantado. No se como podría volver a vivir en Ohio. Estoy lleno de energía y entusiasmo, y mi mente está pensando en ideas nuevas y emocionantes todo el tiempo. El sol ahora sale a las 8 am y atardece a las 7 pm. Es una gran diferencia porque hace unas semanas estaba amaneciendo a las 10 am y atardeciendo a las 4 pm. Mi vecino me dijo que me prepare porque cuando el sol empieza a salir a las 3 am, Alaska se llena con aún más vida!
